Step 1. Warm-up Activity

    A famous saying goes “It’s not the fine coat makes the gentleman.”

    T: What’s its meaning?

    T: How can we avoid hurting others when telling them something unpleasant?

    Please match the following table:

 Step 2. New Words

    alternative: adj. able to be used to instead of something else

cf: alter: v.    alteration: n.

eg: When traffic is bad, use the alternative route.

          n. (to) something that can be used or done instead of something else

eg: In her mind, nobody can be an alternative to him.

   We have to fight: there was no alternative.

 

    deceive: v. cheat

cf: receive

     eg: When are you going to stop deceiving yourself and face the reality?

        “If you love me, please love me for ever; if you just deceive me, please continue deceiving me for the future.” (from a novel)

 

    harsh: rough and disagreeable, esp. to the senses

eg: The color is too harsh to be used in the comfortable place.

     cruel, unkind, severe

eg: It’s a very harsh winter.

     T: Is your father very harsh?

 

    hostility: n. enmity, ill will

cf: hospitality un. welcoming behaviour towards guest

 

    negative: disagreeable;  passive;  saying or meaning “No.”

 


antonym:  agreeable   attractive  affirmative, positive

 

  tolerate: v.

     cf:   bear: something painful or uncomfortable

          tolerate: people or behaviour, but not with pain

     Ss: We have no medicine now, so you have to bear the pain for a while.

        I won’t tolerate your rudeness!

     tolerable: adj.

     tolerably: adv.

     toleration: un. the quality of allowing people to hold different opinions or beliefs or to behave in a way that may not please you, without becoming annoyed

     tolerance: n. besides the above meaning, it has another: the ability to suffer pain or hardship without being damaged

 

    ultimately: adv. finally, in the end

ultimate: adj. final

 

    variance: n.  at variance with: being different from

eg: What he did was at variance with what he said.

   第十课文章本身比较枯燥,但是连线题引起了学生的兴趣,特别是行话的连线,学生都能积极地思考,课堂气氛比预计的要好。由此,得出以下体会:

1.  整堂课45分钟要有张有弛,切忌让学生感到倦怠。

2.  集体答题时,不能冷场,提出问题后,要马上根据学生的反应,采取措施,降低难度。

3.  可穿插一些师生互动的活动,如填表、连线、看图说话、复述句子、猜成语、即兴表演等。
